Fleece-Back TPO Roofing

Fleece-Back TPO Roofing Membrane

Fleece-Back TPO Roofing Membrane

Fleece-Back TPO Roofing Membrane is a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) single-ply roofing membrane featuring a factory-applied fleece backing. Designed for commercial, industrial, and low-slope roofing applications, it combines the weather-resistant properties of TPO with the cushioning and installation benefits of a nonwoven fleece layer.
The fleece backing can help accommodate minor substrate irregularities, improve compatibility with suitable bonding systems, and provide additional protection within the roofing assembly. Depending on the product design and project requirements, fleece-back TPO membranes can be installed using approved fully adhered or mechanically attached systems.
With heat-weldable seams, UV resistance, and flexible system configurations, fleece-back TPO is a practical option for new roof construction and selected roof renovation projects.

Product Highlights

Excellent Weather and UV Resistance

The TPO surface is designed to withstand outdoor exposure, including sunlight, heat, rain, and changing weather conditions, helping protect the underlying roof structure.

Reinforced Fleece Backing

The factory-applied fleece layer adds cushioning and helps accommodate minor substrate irregularities. It also supports bonding with compatible roofing adhesives.

Reliable Heat-Welded Seams

Compatible TPO membrane seams are joined using hot-air welding to create continuous, watertight joints when properly prepared and installed.

Reflective Roofing Surface

Available in white and other colors depending on the product range, reflective TPO surfaces can help reduce solar heat absorption and support cool-roof design objectives.

Flexible Installation Options

Depending on the approved system, fleece-back TPO can be installed using compatible bonding adhesives or mechanical attachment, offering flexibility for different roof assemblies.

Suitable for New Roofs and Renovation

Fleece-back TPO can be specified for new construction and suitable reroofing projects, subject to existing roof condition, substrate compatibility, and local building requirements.

Customized to Your Requirements

Thickness, width, length, color, reinforcement and packaging can be customized depending on product type and order requirements.

Installation Methods

A fully adhered roofing system bonds the entire membrane directly to the roof substrate using liquid or spray-applied bonding adhesive.

  1. 1. Substrate Preparation

Clean and smooth: Ensure the roof deck, insulation, or cover board is clean, dry, smooth, and free of dust, loose gravel, or sharp debris.
Repair defects: Fix wet or damaged insulation flush to the plane, and seal gaps or joints in cover boards (typically keeping board joints to 1/4 inch or less).
Temperature check: Store and apply adhesives when temperatures are generally above 40°F (4°C) or per manufacturer specifications.

  2. 2. Membrane Positioning and Relaxing

Unroll and layout: Position the membrane panels over the substrate, starting from the low point or per project specs, and allow the material to relax for 15 to 30 minutes so it lays flat.
Overlap allowances: Align the sheets with the required side overlaps (typically 3 to 6 inches).
Fold back half: Fold half of the membrane sheet back over itself lengthwise to expose the bottom side and the deck below.

  3. 3. Applying Bonding Adhesive

Apply to both surfaces (or substrate per system): Roll, spray, or brush the approved bonding adhesive evenly across the exposed substrate and, depending on the manufacturer guidelines, onto the back of the membrane. (Note: Do not apply adhesive directly into the overlap seam areas).
Flash-off period: Allow the adhesive to dry or “flash off” until it becomes tacky (does not string or stick heavily to a dry finger touch).

  4. 4. Mating and Rolling the Membrane

Embed the sheet: Carefully roll or “flutter” the coated membrane back into the wet/tacky adhesive to avoid wrinkles or air pockets.
Broom and roll: Immediately apply heavy pressure using a stiff-bristle push broom, followed by rolling the entire bonded surface with a heavy steel roller (typically a minimum 100 lb roller) to ensure 100% full contact.
Repeat: Fold back the unbonded half of the sheet and repeat the adhesive application, flash-off, and rolling process for the rest of the panel.

  5. 5. Seams and Details

Heat weld or tape seams: Overlap adjoining sheets and join them using hot-air welding.
Probe seams: Once cooled or set, mechanically probe all welded or taped seams with a seam tester to check for voids or unbonded edges, repairing any deficiencies immediately.
Flash penetrations: Detail roof curbs, walls, drains, and pipe penetrations using manufacturer-approved flashing membranes, cut-edge sealants, and termination bars.

Why choose Fleece-Back TPO Roofing?

Dependable Waterproofing Performance

A properly installed TPO membrane system helps create a continuous waterproof barrier, with heat-welded seams that reduce the risk of water infiltration.

Added Protection from Fleece Backing

The integrated fleece layer provides additional cushioning and helps accommodate minor substrate irregularities compared with a membrane without fleece backing.

Improved Reflective Roofing Options

White TPO membranes can support cool-roof strategies by reflecting a portion of incoming solar radiation, depending on the product’s tested radiative properties.

Flexible System Design

Compatible adhered and mechanically attached assemblies provide options for different roof structures, substrate conditions, and project specifications.

Practical for New Construction and Reroofing

Fleece-back TPO can be used in suitable new-build and roof recover projects, potentially reducing the need for complete tear-off when the existing assembly qualifies.

Customizable for Project Requirements

Available product configurations can include different membrane thicknesses, colors, roll sizes, and backing specifications. Project-specific technical data can help buyers select the appropriate solution.

FAQ

Q1. What is fleece-back TPO roofing membrane?

It is a thermoplastic polyolefin roofing membrane with a factory-applied fleece backing. It is commonly used in commercial and industrial single-ply roofing systems.

Q2. What is the difference between standard TPO and fleece-back TPO?

Standard TPO generally has no factory-applied fleece layer. Fleece-back TPO includes an additional backing that provides cushioning and supports compatible adhered or other approved installation systems.

Q3. Can fleece-back TPO be installed over an existing roof?

Yes, for selected roof recover projects. The existing roof must be inspected for moisture, stability, compatibility, and compliance with local building codes and the selected system requirements.

Q4. Can fleece-back TPO be mechanically attached?

Some products are approved for mechanically attached assemblies, while others are designed for specific adhered systems. Verify the membrane’s approval and installation guide before selecting a method.

Q5. How are TPO membrane seams joined?

TPO field seams are generally joined by hot-air welding. Correct surface preparation, welding conditions, and seam inspection are essential for reliable waterproofing.

Q6. Is fleece-back TPO suitable for hot climates?

Reflective white TPO products can be suitable for many hot-climate applications. Actual performance depends on the membrane’s tested properties, insulation, roof design, and local conditions.

Q7. What thicknesses are available?

Thicknesses vary by manufacturer and product range. Tianda Commercial fleece-back TPO products may be offered in multiple total sheet thicknesses, such as 1.2, 1.5 or 2.0 mm. Confirm the available specifications for your product.

Q8. What accessories are needed?

Depending on the roof assembly, accessories may include compatible bonding adhesive, TPO flashing materials, reinforced patches, prefabricated corners, pipe boots, termination bars, fasteners, and insulation.

Q9. How long does fleece-back TPO roofing last?

Service life depends on product quality, roof design, installation, maintenance, and environmental exposure. Use the manufacturer’s published warranty and project-specific guidance rather than assuming a fixed lifespan.

Q10. Can you provide customized fleece-back TPO roofing?

Product options may include different thicknesses, colors, roll dimensions, backing specifications, and packaging. Contact the supplier with your project requirements to confirm available customization.
